Terje Toomistu is an anthropologist and documentary filmmaker, whose works often draw from various cross-cultural processes, queer realities and subjectivities, and cultural memory. She holds double MA degrees (cum laude) in Ethnology and in Media and Communication from University of Tartu, and a PhD in Ethnology from the same university, with a dissertation focusing on warias, Indonesian transgender women, in the context of anthropology informed by feminist and queer theories, a topic which she covered in her documentary film "Wariazone".

She is also active in the study of the non-conformist youth of the late Soviet era, specifically the Soviet hippie movement, which she covered in her documentary "Soviet Hippies".

She has supplemented her studies in France (Université de Montpellier), Russia (Voronezh State University) and Indonesia (University of Sanata Dharma). In 2013-2014, she was also a Fulbright fellow in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies in University of California Berkeley, U.S.
