Vítor Manuel Ferreira Rua, better known as Vítor Rua (Mesão Frio, 23rd July 1961) is a Portuguese musician, producer and composer.

Biography

A self taught composer, he dedicated most of his life to rock, musique concrete, electronics, electroacoustic and improvised music. He first studied guitar playing at the Duarte Costa Music School in Porto under José Pina (1974 - 1976). He started his career in 1971 as part of several pop-rock outfits, moving on to the King Fischer's Band between 76 and 77 and later becoming one of the founders of the Portuguese pop-rock outfit GNR, from which he would eventually resign in a very public manner through a manifesto. Afterwards he founded the duo Telectu with Jorge Lima Barreto, where he has been one of the leading figures in Portuguese experimental and improvised music.

Towards the end of the 80s Vítor Rua taught himself music notation and began a new chapter as a composer. In 1990 he devised the improvised music LP "Vidya", which later spawned the Vidya Ensemble group to perform those pieces and others. Vítor Rua also frequently composes for theatre, dance and cinema. More recently he has also performed with a new group called Vitor Rua & The Metaphysical Angels.
