Carlos Augusto Holtremann Franco (born in Lisbon, Encarnação, May 15th 1927 - Died in Lisbon, February 6th 2011) was a Portuguese flautist and pedagogue.
Biography
Carlos Franco began his musical education with his father, Augusto Carlos Franco (a musician and conductor) at the age of 5.
In 1946, at the age of 19, he began his career as a military musician with the National Guard Band.
He studied at the National Conservatory, where he studied the flute, piano and music history under Lúcio Mendes, Luís Boulton, Aroldo Silva and Maria Augusta Barbosa. However, he decided to drop out of his studies after being disappointed with them.
He continued working as a flautist in several bands and orchestras throughout Portugal, becoming the soloist of the Porto Symphonic Orchestra in 1960. It was there that he began collaborating with Clothilde Rosa (whom he would marry in 1980) and Jorge Peixinho, with whom he later founded the Lisbon Contemporary Music Group in 1970.
