Ernesto Rodrigues
From Unearthing The Music
Ernesto Rodrigues (Lisbon, 29th August 1959) is a Portuguese performer (violin, viola and electronics) and composer.
Biography
Ernesto Rodrigues has been playing the violin for over 20 years in all genres of music ranging from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio. He first started studying music at age seven, under Wenceslau Pinho, and in 1973 he was in the Academia de Amadores de Música before joining the National Conservatory shortly after, where he would study the violin and composition. He studied with Emmanuel Nunes, Paulo Brandão, Eurico Carrapatoso e Pedro M. Rocha, and participated in several courses and workshops with Jorge Peixinho and Constança Capdeville, among others.
His main interests lie in contemporary improvised and composed music, as well as indeterminate and graphic scores by Gerhard Stäbler. The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements. Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning. Has created music for films, dance, performance, video, etc.
He has been active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups including many important and creative musicians such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Nuno Rebelo, Carlos Bechegas, Marco Franco, Vera Mantero, Jeffrey Morgan, José Oliveira, Margarida Garcia, Gregg Moore, Rodrigo Amado, Manuel Mota, Ulrich Mitzlaff, Alfredo Costa Monteiro, Guilherme Rodrigues, Gianni Gebbia, Monsieur Trinité, Gabriel Paiuk, Carlos Santos, Tim Goldie, Gerhard Uebele, Nicolas Field, Jaime Fennelly, etc.
He was a founding member of groups such as Metropolis, Fromage Digital, Lautari Consort, IKB Ensemble e Suspensão. In 2000 he founded the Variable Geometry Orchestra.
Ernesto Rodrigues has also worked with contemporary dancers like Ana Galan, Isabel Valverde, Mário Calixto, Anna Pázstor, etc, and has performed at festivals all over Europe.
In 1999 he created the Creative Sources Recordings record label, which mainly releases experimental and electro-acoustic music.
