Horia Şurianu (born July 3, 1952 in Timisoara) is a Romanian composer and musicologist. He studied composition at the conservatory in Bucharest. He has lived in France since 1983. Since 1997 he has been a full professor at the Bagnolet and Massy Conservatory and president of the Association Culturelle d'Expansion Musicale, Paris.

His musical education began with violin studies at the Ion Vidu Music High School in Timisoara followed by a Masters Degree and post-graduate studies in musical composition at the University of Bucharest within the framework of the Ciprian Porumbescu Higher National Conservatory of Music in Romania, DEA (Diploma of Advanced Studies) and a Doctorate in Arts and Sciences of Art at the University of Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne in France. He has been a guest composer at the electronic music studios of East Anglia University in Norwich, UK and has participated in the ballet music workshop at the University of Guilford in UK, as well as an internship in computer music at IRCAM in Paris.

In terms of composition, he has written music in different genres (symphonic and concert music, chamber music, ballet, theater, television film, educational music, choral and electronic music). He has received commissions from cultural institutions, including the French State for a Concerto for saxophone and for "Évolutions Éphémères" (piece for ten instruments) or the Scottish Arts Council for Six Solos (ballet music. He was awarded the second prize at the International Composition Competition Marcel Josse in Paris for "Waves, Ondes, Contours" (piece for six alto saxophones).

His music has been performed around the world on prestigious stages such as at Carnegie Hall in New York, at the Maison de Radio France, at the Centre Pompidou and at the Opéra Comique in Paris, at the Place Théâtre in London or at the Salle de at the Philharmonie Ateneul Român and at the Radio Hall in Bucharest as well as in other big cities such as Berlin, Budapest, Cologne, Edinburgh, La Plata, Münich, Vienna, etc.

His compositions have been published by several labels such as Éditions Combre, Éditions Delatour, Éditions Henry Lemoin, Éditions Salabert in France, Éditions Kossack in Germany and Editura Muzicala in Romania. Several works have been burned on CD or transmitted by Radios or Televisions in the world.

His music is placed between spectral and modal research translated by intersections of certain areas of the sound spectrum combined with symmetrical modal structures both harmonically and melodically. The timing of this material is often designed by digital series resulting from continuously moving matrices (see for example the piece "Waves, Waves, Contours"). The composer is concerned about the proportion between consonance and dissonance in intellectual but also physiological perception by trying to find a balance (without going back to tonal music).

Apart from composition, Horia Şurianu also leads an intense educational activity: associate professor at the University of Paris 1, Panthéon-Sorbonne, professor of composition, musical writing (harmony, counterpoint), analysis and the class of orchestra at the Bagnolet Conservatory of Music, Est-Ensemble (Grand Paris). For years he also worked as a professor of musical writing in the Conservatories of music of Massy and Fontenay-aux-Roses in the Paris region.

His musicology articles have been published in various specialty journals and musical publications.
