Jiří Stivín (born 23 November 1942 in Prague) is a Czech flute player and composer.[1]

Biography

Jiří Stivín graduated from the Film Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU). He also studied composition at the Royal Academy of Music as well as at the Prague Academy of Music (AMU).[1]

He began his music career as part of rock band Sputnici, before devoting himself to jazz and founding Jazz Q in the 1960s. Later he would study in London, at the Royal Academy of Music, for a year, and upon returning to Czechoslovakia he formed Jiří Stivín & Co.

Between 1967 and 1969 he was a member of the ensemble of the Jára Cimrman Theater. From 1970 to 1973 he performed as a member, soloist and finally as the conductor of the drama orchestra of the National Theater in Prague.

Stivín performs music from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Baroque periods. As a soloist, he performed with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, with the Slovak Chamber Orchestra, with the Suk Chamber Orchestra, Barocco sempre giovane, as well as with several other ensembles. He is also involved in jazz, both as a performer and as a composer.[1] He gives regular lectures at the Prague Conservatory.

Stivín has a large discography ranging from jazz to classical music.

His daughter Zuzana Stivínová is an actress.
