Fernando Jorge da Ponte de Lima Barreto, better known as Jorge Lima Barreto (Vinhais, December 26th 1949 - Lisbon, July 9th 2011) was a Portuguese musician, writer, musicologist and teacher.

Biography

A self taught musician, he began studying the church organ and the piano in his youth. Later he was a member of the Portuguese Musical Youth, where he created the Conceptual Music Association who brought together performers and composers such as Carlos Zíngaro and António Pinho Vargas with interested listeners and organized concerts in Porto.

He was a founder of the Anar Band (1972), with Rui Reininho, of Telectu (1981) with Vitor Rua, and the duo Zul Zelub, with Jonas Runa (2007). Throughout his career he also collaborated with artists such as Elliot Sharp, Chris Cutler, Sunny Murray, Jac Berrocal, Louis Sclavis, Daniel Kientzy, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Evan Parker, Gerry Hemingway, Paul Lytton and Eddie Prévost. He held a degree in Art History (1973) and then a doctorate (1993) by the New University in Lisbon, with a thesis entitled "Music and Mass Media". Shortly before his death he returned to that same university to attain a PhD in Communication Sciences (in 2010) with a thesis entitled "Aesthetics of Musical Communication - the Improvisation". Earlier he had been an assistant professor at the Faculty of Letters of the Porto University and the Escola Superior de Belas Artes in Porto (1974 - 1978).

He was also active in music journalism, having published articles in many newspapers and magazines in Portugal and abroad (such as Vida Mundial, Mundo da Canção, Memória do Elefante, Blitz, Point, Hi-Fi, among others), as a presenter (e.g the 1st Symposium of Electronic Music in the USSR - 1985), and a musicologist (with books including "Revolução do Jazz" (1972), "Jazz-Off" (1973), "Rock Trip" (1974), "Rock & Droga" (1982), "Música Minimal Repetitiva" (1990), "JazzArte" (1994), "Música e Mass Media" (1996), "Musa Lusa "(1997), "B-Boy" (1998) e "Zapp" (2000)) and a radio host (between 1982 and 1991 at Rádio Comercial with the show "Musonautas", where he interviewed artists and composers such as: Anthony Braxton (n. 1945), Luciano Berio (1925-2003), Pierre Boulez (1925-2016), Cecil Taylor (1929-2018), Daniel Kientzy (n. 1951), Emmanuel Nunes (1941-2012), Filipe Pires (1960-2015), Jorge Peixinho, Steve Reich (n. 1936), Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007), Wolf Vostell (1932-1998), Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001))
