Life
Juraj Pospíšil studied at the grammar school in Olomouc and at the same time devoted himself to music at the Municipal Music School, where he studied piano, organ and music theory. He entered the Brno Conservatory and completed one semester at the composition department of the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts under Vilém Petrželka. He completed his studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. Its professors were leading Slovak composers Alexander Moyzes and Ján Cikker. Since 1955 he worked as a professor of music theory and composition at the Bratislava Conservatory and at the Academy of Performing Arts. He has published a number of instructive and pedagogical works and contributed articles on music to magazines and the professional press.
Until 1958, he followed the work of Czech and Slovak classics of the 20th century and composed classical tonal music. Between 1958 and 1962 he underwent a period of searching, when he became acquainted with and tried the compositional methods of contemporary world music. Since 1963, he has composed mostly twelve-tone music. He also tested the possibilities of electroacoustic music. In 1988 he received an award from the Union of Slovak Composers. Pospíšil developed a compositional style which owed much to the Second Viennese School while paying homage to Slovak tradition.
