Macromassa
From Unearthing The Music
Macromassa was an experimental music project founded in Barcelona, Spain in 1976 by Victor Nubla and Juan Crek. Their music cross-polinated jazz influences and cultural elements with electronics, the avant-garde, industrial, new-wave and many other elements, transforming considerably during their history. The band has collaborated widely with other artists, counting over 140 collaborators throughout its activity.
Biography
Despite being focused on music, Macromassa were, from their conception, active in experimenting in the literary field, performances and installations. Their first album Darlia Microtónic, recorded in 1976 at the Màgic room in Barcelona and published in 1978 in a limited edition, is currently considered the first self-published album in Spain.
Between 1978 and 1997 Macromassa published 9 official records and one cassette and participated in 16 compilations. The group's trajectory was interrupted two times: between 1980 and 1983, and between 1997 and 2008, periods in which Crek and Nubla devoted themselves to their respective solo careers.
Macromassa is a key project in the Spanish industrial or post-industrial scene of the eighties, along with groups such as Esplendor Geométrico or Comando Bruno, but their versatility over the years also places them as a reference name in the improvised music scene in Spain and in the field of polypoetry, especially their show Apushasha: el punto 3502. The difficulty of defining Macromassa stylistically stems from the strong and personal surrealism and humor that permeate all of their work.
