Poerocks

From Unearthing The Music

Poerocks (initially Elektra) - was a Polish punk rock band founded in Wrocław by Waldemar "Ace" Mleczka, active in the years 1977–1981. They were the first punk rock band to form in southern Poland [1].

Biography

Elektra was founded by students of the Primary School No. 72 in Wrocław [2]. Their allegiance to punk was proved early on - During a school review of scout bands, Waldemar "Ace" Mleczko destroyed the scout uniform by writing "Sex Pistols" on it with a pen [2]. The band played the concert on acoustic guitars, and the drummer placed the snare drum on a stool, while the cymbals were hung through a chandelier [2]. As a result of the concert, the band's members were expelled from the Polish Scouting Association (for the "aggressive music" and the destruction of the uniform) despite receiving an audience award [2].

Drummer Maciej Kozieł later chose a new name in order to show the power of rock [2]. "Poerocks" is a shortened combination of the words "power" and "rocks" [2]. Later, Waldemar Mleczko would tell people that the name came from Edgar Allan Poe [2].

The band played their first concert as Poerocks in 1979 in the Pod Jaworów hut[2], where they played for an audience of 500 [2].

In 1980 the band played at the 1st Polish National Review of New Wave in Kołobrzeg (alongside KSU, Kryzys, Tilt, Fornit and Deadlock) [2]. As a result of an oversight, the band was advertised in commercials as Powerocks [2].

During a concerts in which Poerocks played with a Czechoslovakian band at the Almatur center in Łazy, "Ace" composed a piece with the Soviet anthem as the theme [2]. As a result of the incident, the band from Czechoslovakia was deported to an unknown destination, and the members of the Poerocks were taken to Mielno, where they were beaten for two days [2].

Poerocks broke up in 1981. Soon after, the hard rock band Poerox[2] was formed.
