Biography
Sandor Kalloś was born on 23 October 1935 in Chernivtsi. He first studied at the Chernivtsi School of Music (graduating in 1957), and later graduated from the Lviv Conservatory in 1961, having studied composition under Adam Sołtys. His graduate studies were at the Moscow Conservatory (class of Yuri Shaporin, 1962–1964). Between 1954 and 1963 he worked as a violinist in various symphony orchestras. From 1971 onwards he also performed as a lutenist (notably accompanying the "Madrigal" soloist ensemble, Karina, Ruzanna and Pavel Lisitsian), and, since 1975, as a conductor.
He wrote at least four symphonies, two violin concertos, a number of ballets (including "Alice in Wonderland", based on the book of the same name, for choreographer Mai Murdmaa, and "Macbeth" and "Faust" for Nikolai Boyarchikov) and several operas, including "Kupriyanov and Natasha" based on Alexander Vvedensky. In 1967 he began working in the field of electronic music with the ANS synthesizer at the Moscow Experimental Electronic Music Studio.
